Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy: A Transformative Approach to Healing
As an integral and transpersonal therapist, I believe in the potential benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy for some people, especially when safety, therapeutic relationships, and ethics are prioritized. We are entering a new frontier in mental health treatment as research into psychedelics continues to show us how helpful they can be for a range of symptoms such as treatment resistant depression, substance use disorders, anxiety, and trauma.
I currently only offer KAP sessions in-person. I also require that you be working with your own therapist. If you do not have a therapist, you must be willing to work with me for an agreed upon amount of time that is dependent on your needs or you must find a therapist to work with before beginning treatment.
What Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an innovative therapeutic approach that combines the benefits of psychotherapy with the unique properties of ketamine, offering a promising solution for those seeking transformative healing experiences. KAP has shown promise in rapidly alleviating symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy involves the administration of ketamine in a controlled setting, guided by a trained therapist. The psychedelic experience induced by ketamine can enhance the therapeutic process, allowing individuals to explore and process emotions at a deeper level. The combination of therapy and ketamine can lead to profound insights and increased self-awareness. Unlike traditional medications, the effects of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy can endure beyond the session itself, contributing to sustained mental well-being.
What is ketamine?
Ketamine is a schedule III dissociative anesthetic that has long been safely used in medical settings. In recent years, it has gained attention for its potential in mental health treatment. Unlike IV ketamine clinics, KAP uses lower doses of ketamine in oral form.
The benefits of using oral ketamine:
The effects of oral ketamine are generally considered to be milder compared to IV administration.
Users may experience a dream-like or dissociative state, with altered perceptions of time and space.
Oral ketamine often leads to longer-lasting therapeutic effects.
It is common that clients feel they are in a more relaxed state during the session.
The experience has been described as "heart opening."
Oral ketamine is less invasive and may be more suitable for some patients who may have reservations about needles.
Safety and Professional Guidance
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy should only be conducted by qualified and experienced mental health professionals who are well-versed in both ketamine administration and psychotherapeutic techniques. The treatment is conducted in a carefully controlled environment to ensure the physical and emotional safety of the individual undergoing therapy. Although some research suggests that at-home ketamine and virtual ketamine sessions may be effective, I currently only offer this service in person.
Is KAP right for you?
While KAP has shown positive results for many, it's essential to consider individual factors such as medical history, current medications, and personal preferences before deciding if this therapy is suitable. I highly suggest that you speak with your own health care practitioners and prescribers about KAP before beginning the process.
Prospective clients are encouraged to schedule a consultation with me to learn more about KAP. Together we can make an informed decision about your mental health journey.
What is the KAP process?
Before undergoing KAP, individuals must go through a thorough intake and assessment process to ensure appropriateness for the treatment. This involves an initial intake with me as well as a medical intake with my partnering prescriber. Medical clearance is required before beginning KAP sessions. After your medical intake if cleared, a preparation session is scheduled. KAP sessions are typically structured, with a preparation phase, the administration of ketamine, and an integration phase where the therapist helps the individual process and make sense of their experiences. The average number of recommended sessions is 6 followed by once a month booster sessions for 2-3 weeks. If possible, Sessions 2x per week for the first 2 weeks is recommended.
The schedule you follow will be unique to you and your needs. Below is a sample schedule of what is typically recommended. If you cleared by the medical intake for KAP, you and I will discuss what schedule works best for you.
